Handmade Books
Have you ever saved that scrap of wrapping paper or material as you found it too lovely to discard? I take these remnants and give them a new lease of life by reworking them into numerous book forms. Books are tools for recording ideas, information, images and stories but they don’t have to be mundane objects that don’t stir your creativity. Handmade books can be fashioned in all shapes and sizes, with different page arrangements and alternative bindings. I use natural materials such a woollen tweeds, leathers and handmade papers to fashion tactile, hardwearing notebooks to capture special thoughts.
Jotter
How lovely is it to have a clean page and a freshly sharpened pencil to capture those important notes? More lovely still if you have made the jotter yourself; carefully folded papers stitched into your own unique cover design. A perfect place to capture those fleeting ideas, sketch plans or even a song lyric…
Hardbacked Notebook
A handmade hard-backed notebook may seem indulgent for everyday use but when an object offers beauty, functionality, has a wonderful tactile hand-feel and a lifetimes longevity then it becomes an item to treasure. These unlined notebooks filled with handmade paper are perfect to capture life’s important moments and are often given as gifts to mark significant celebrations.
Other Books
Not all books are simple folded sheets in a plain cover. Books can take many forms, loose or fixed covers, soft or stiff leaves, flat or folded pages, have concealed or open bindings, lined or unlined… the choices are many. In creating other book types the projects can span from hours to days and can lead to remarkable outcomes; a writeable surface is the essence, their construction is the art.
Book Craft
A book should be well read and pass through many hands before it can be considered to be at the end of its ‘readable’ life, but the journey need not stop there. There are all sorts of possibilities for much loved, yet tired editions. Through book craft you can create a range of decorative objects for the home and as gifts for others.
