Textiles

As our lives have become more hectic many hand crafting skills have been lost. These hand crafts were often communal activities where skills would be passed down from generation to generation. They were also influenced by the need to create new from old. My work seeks to keep these crafts alive, offer the opportunity for others to engage in them and to reuse and repurpose items; yet at the same time give them a contemporary twist.

Fabric Craft

Traditional yarn and fabric based crafts are currently enjoying a well deserved revival. Embroidery and appliqué techniques can be used to lift mundane items into treasured objects. With some inspiration and up to date techniques everyday objects can be fashioned for a lifetime of use.

Felting

Have you ever washed a jumper and it has ended up a matted mess? Then you have unwittingly felted your first item! Using wet and dry felting techniques desirable objects with both practical and aesthetic characteristics can be fashioned .

Hooking

There are well established and modern hooking techniques that use spare and scrap materials to create beautifully crafted objects. Many homes would have a hard wearing rug made from rags, today these techniques are still used to make rugs but also can be used to create wall hangings or decorative accessories.

Upcycling

According to Keep Britain Tidy a staggering 10,000 items of clothing are sent to landfill every five minutes. With these frightening statistics it is important that we try to reuse and repurpose as much as we can. A no longer needed item can be saved from landfill and transformed into a useful object for the home or garden.
